What to consider when having family portraits done
(or any other kind of professional portraits for that matter).
There has been a strong push in photography to just take photos for clients and give them a disc of digital images. This is bad form in my opinion and here is why I think so.
Imagine if you knew that twenty years from now someone was going to break into your house with the intent of destroying all your photos. That if successful all of your memories would be destroyed.
Would you not take all measures to make sure your images are protected, to stop that person. Yet unfortunately that person could well be you.
That is when you get a disc of images you need to consider that digital files do not last forever. That saving money by printing on cheaper products means those products will most likely fade significantly if not totally over that time not to mention not be built to last in the first place. Add that statistics show most people intend to get digital images printed but end up leaving their disc or USB stick in a draw and never get around to it.
That is why ethically I believe photographers who charge money should do so with the intent of providing clients with archival quality products that will last them over their lifetime. That those images will be providing joy even in old age.
J M Barrie once said “God gave us memories that we might have roses in December” so I encourage those considering having a professional capture their portraits to take on one bit of advice that is not about me or any single photographer, it’s about you and if you take this on board you will thank me one day and it is simply this… don’t let your memories fade.
